MELTON BY-PASS - Where are we now?
Melton Borough Council's Local Development Framework (LDF) is out for public consultation and a very important aspect is that it gives the council's view on where the 1,000 new homes the Government requires it to identify development land for will go. The LDF also identifies possible By-pass routes that might eventually make a ring road around the town. The County Council is working closely with Melton Borough Council advising them on by-pass routes but it cannot proceed with any design work until the Borough Council confirms its preferred route for a By-pass. Present Government policy is clear that to secure any financial contribution towards a By-pass cum ring road, there must first be some significant developer funding as a result of housing development. Where the 1,000 homes are to go therefore influences where the first By-pass link is likely to be built.
It is expected that the final version of the Melton LDF will be published early in 2010. The following links offer additional information on progress towards a ring road for Melton Mowbray.
